Ferrets, cats and dogs! Oh my!

About

The Site
Gloria is a pet project of mine to further my own writing talents, pay homage to a deceased ferret and educate those who are willing to learn some of the bits and pieces of knowledge and pet related logic I have collected over the years. Google Ads have been implemented to the navigaton bar not to infurriate readers but to earn some sort of modest income off of this project. Why? Caring for four ferrets, a dog, a cat and three birds costs a little bit. And I do like to treat them to the best toys and snacks that I’m capable of.

By no means is this blog meant to replace more traditional forms of wisdom that are available in plenty from your local bookstore, or by picking the ear of your local and friendly veterinarians. Consider my tips supplemental information. If you ever find me in fault feel absolutely free to point it out.

The Man
I’m a 21 year old New Englander who does his best to pay the bills and remain sane at the same time. Sometimes I fail at one or the other. If its the ladder I get a new animal to take care of.

The Animals
Say hello to Bently, the newest addition. He is what we believe to be a corgi/sheltie mix. He has the corgi body type, but the sheltie temperament and fur style. It took him a little while to get used to our household, but now that he’s finally settled in he does very well. His favorite foods include roast chicken and peanut butter and as such he is a little over weight. He cannot be bothered to play fetch, but he’s a very quiet and well behaved dog. Very rarely does he bark or get into something he’s not supposed to. He came to us from a small animal shelter in Massachusetts as a birthday present. We believe he has a “puppy past,” due to his behavior around men and strangers.

Cujo the Tortie kitten is destroyer of worlds. Cujo is a sweet one year old tortie shell with an intense curiousity of ferrets and their taste. Fortunately they hold the same curiosity of her. We adopted Cujo from a local animal shelter in the summer of 2006 as a tiny kitten. She enjoys torturing Bently, myself, the ferrets and the birds. She also has an unhealthy obsession with our toilet and used shower water for no apparent reason. She can usually be found on top of the ferret cage, on my side of the bed, in my office chair, or on the couch just as my favorite program is about to begin.

Rockhopper is my first ferret and matriarch of the business I tend to.  We bought her at a Petco as a kit and she rules the the other three weasels with an iron fist. Er, paw. She’s an incredibly sweet and well behaved ferret as far as ferrets go. We’ve had a couple of scares with her in the past (acting lethargic, accidental poisoning), but she’s always bounced back better than ever.

We adopted Penny from a local ferret adoption society. She was our third ferret. Rockhopper, being an only ferret and used to soaking up all the attention did not take kindly to another barging in on her territory. Penny has some behavioral problems that mainly involve her inability to use a litter pan properly (it is a toy, not a spot to do your business), but that can be expected considering the environment she was raised in.

Gloria was our second ferret. We purchased her from Petco when she was a very small kit (likely too young for her own good.) She quickly became very ill and died shortly afterward. Rockhopper caught whatever infection she had developed and became ill as well. Rockhopper pulled through, Gloria did not. In her honor I’ve created this blog.

Soon to come: Adora and Ben the ferrets, Greg the cockatiel, Bing the lovebird and Olive the parakeet.
